Customer segmentation is a valuable strategy that allows businesses to target specific customers with personalized content and promotions. By dividing customers into segments based on various properties, such as their address, order history, or shopping cart contents, businesses can optimize their marketing initiatives and provide a tailored shopping experience.
Understanding Customer Segments
Customer segments differ from customer groups in terms of their usage. While customer groups are used in catalog price rules, customer segments are used in a wider range of contexts, including cart price rules, tier prices, related product rules, dynamic blocks, reward exchange rates, category permissions, and invitations.
Customer Segment Attributes
Customer segment attributes are defined similarly to shopping cart and catalog price rules. To use an attribute in a customer segment condition, the “Use in Customer Segment” property must be set to “Yes.” There are several types of attributes that can be incorporated into customer segment conditions:
Customer Address Fields
These attributes pertain to the address fields of customers, such as city or country. Any address in a customer’s address book can match these conditions, or businesses can specify that only the default billing or shipping addresses should be used. It’s important to note that customer address attributes are only available for logged-in customers.
Customer Information Fields
Miscellaneous customer information attributes can be defined, including customer group, name, email, newsletter subscription status, and store credit balance. Similar to customer address fields, customer information fields are only accessible for logged-in customers.
Cart Fields
Cart properties can be based on either the quantity (line items or total quantity) or the value (such as grand total, tax, and gift card) of the cart contents.
Products
Product attributes can be referenced for products that are currently in the shopping cart or wishlist, or that have been previously viewed or ordered. A date range can also be set for when these actions occurred.
Order Fields
Order characteristics for past orders can be defined based on the billing/shipping address in the order, the total or average amount/quantity of the orders, or the total number of orders. Similar to other attributes, a date range and order status can be specified. However, it’s worth noting that these conditions are only available for logged-in customers. Conditions set for non-logged-in shoppers cease to function once they log in.
